"Addressing Grand Challenges through Science" Workshop
The “Addressing Grand Challenges through Science” workshop was held June 4-5, 2009 in conjunction with the 2009 World Pork Expo at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, IA. Fifty-eight pork producers, scientists,
educators, and industry experts were present to help identify the most critical issues facing the U.S. Pork Industry. The objectives of the meeting, as outlined to attendees before the event, were to:
- Develop champions for Science (Science Advocacy)
- Identify critical issues
- Identify areas of opportunities with regard to scientific need over the next ten years
- Review status of capacity (research and intellectual)
- Prioritize scientific approach to addressing grand challenges for use by industry
- Develop mechanism for improving coordination of investments
In order to meet these objectives, speakers from several areas of the industry gave presentations to help bring different perspectives to the discussion. After hearing from these speakers, participants formed breakout groups in order to begin identifying and prioritizing the specific challenges to be addressed. With declining funding for research, issues must be prioritized in order to use the available funding on the most pertinent issues, and this was the goal of the “Addressing
Grand Challenges through Science” workshop.
